Rugby Union returned to the National Sports Festival (NSF) 2020 after a ten-year absence after missing the last three editions in Lagos, Rivers and Abuja.
The NSF is a biennial multi-sport event organized by the Nigerian federal government through the National Sports Commission for Athletes from the 36 states of Nigeria.
Rugby was last recognized as a medalist in Kaduna in 2009 after making its debut at the Gateway Games in Ogun state in 2006. Previously, rugby had gone through a mandatory demonstration in three consecutive events.
The Kano men’s team won the seven gold medals at Adolor College, home of NSF rugby, after beating all opponents except Team Edo, which forced Kano to a 12-12 line.
Delta bounced back to finish first in the event ten, while the pack of the Edo State team proved too strong in the event fifteen, earning the host team gold.
In the women’s competition, Edo State and Delta went head to toe in all three competitions, as Team Edo emerged with gold medals in seven and fifteen years and left Delta with gold in the ten-man competition.
