Archbishop Thabo Makgoba asks Biden to provide the Moderna vaccine in South Africa

[Anglican Communion News Service] The Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba, has urged US President Joe Biden to harness the immense wealth and power of the US to ensure that South Africa and other countries in dire need of coronavirus vaccines have access to them. Speaking to online publication The Intercept, Makgoba said, “I would say to President Biden, ‘You have an amazing opportunity to be a force for good in the world. So we appeal to you … look at those who suffer and make sure there is access to this life-saving vaccine, especially in the global south. “
Makgoba specifically calls on the Biden government to make the Moderna vaccine available in South Africa. He wants the Moderna vaccine because it’s 94% effective. Until recently, South Africa was preparing to begin injecting the Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccine, but the government stopped rollout as it was shown that this vaccine offered minimal protection against a variant of the coronavirus, first discovered in South Africa.
