Egypt sentenced 9 policemen for torturing and killing road distributors

The North Cairo criminal court on Saturday sentenced a police officer and eight NCOs from the Amiriya Police Station to three years in prison for the 2016 murder of fish seller Magdy Maken.

As soon as their verdict was announced, the defendants collapsed in the courtroom and stopped crying.

The court also acquitted an official after making his decision.

In October 2019, prosecutors referred the police officers to the criminal court, accusing them of torturing Maken to death and falsifying the report of the incident.

Maken was arrested in November 2016 after his horse-drawn carriage collided with a police car.

A forensic report confirmed that Maken had been tortured and that the cause of death was a blood clot in his lungs caused by spinal trauma after officers stood on his back.
