Egypt submits initial bids for reconstruction projects in Gaza

GAZA, Oct. 19 (Xinhuanet) – An Egyptian committee on Tuesday submitted the first bids for reconstruction projects in the besieged Gaza Strip, the coastal enclave ruled by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), a Palestinian government official said.

Naji Sarhan, undersecretary of the Hamas-led Ministry of Public Works and Housing in the Gaza Strip, said in a press release that the Egyptian Reconstruction Committee had made the offers in coordination with the ministry.

“The first project involves the rebuilding of Gaza’s main coastal road in the northern Gaza Strip,” said Sarhan, adding that his ministry will coordinate with all interested parties to properly complete the project.

He added that Palestinian companies will carry out all infrastructure-related work, including paving, water, sewage, rainwater, and electricity and communications, and will endeavor to build the coastal road to the best of their ability.

For the first time, the Egyptian Reconstruction Committee published offers for reconstruction projects in the Gaza Strip in a Gaza newspaper.

The Egyptian committee will provide the necessary materials for the project according to Egyptian construction plans, and the next phase will include the preparation of plans for a residential city in the northern Gaza Strip.

On September 23, Egypt sent a delegation of engineers with reconstruction equipment and vehicles to the Gaza Strip to prepare the project.

In early June, an Egyptian delegation visited the Gaza Strip to help clean up rubble from buildings destroyed by Israeli fighter jets during the recent tensions with Israel in May.

On May 21, Egypt brokered a ceasefire agreement that ended 11 days of hostility between Israel and Hamas-led militant groups in the Gaza Strip, in which more than 250 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed.

The latest round of tension also left widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure and other buildings in Gaza, home to more than two million Palestinians.

After the ceasefire, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi pledged $ 500 million for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip with the participation of specialized Egyptian construction companies.
