the European Union (EU) hosted an event on Monday to promote his Youth Sounding Board in Nigeria, creation of 25 members who will influence EU development cooperation in the country.
Board members were selected on the basis of merit and in recognition of Nigeria’s diversity, officials said.
The Youth Sounding Board is a space for young people to influence the EU’s external action through their international partnerships. The Advisory Board will help make EU action more participatory, relevant and effective for young people in Nigeria in all political priorities.
The head of EU cooperation in Nigeria, Cecile Tassin-Pelzer, said in her introductory words that the EU wants to include young people. That is why “we have selected representatives of the young people and we would like them to help shape our new programs and make decisions.”
We want young people to help us make our projects and programs more adaptable in their minds, she said.
Ms Tassin-Pelzer said she believed that young people need to be involved in the design and implementation of the EU’s external action. She added that the EU and the Nigerian government have agreed to help create employment opportunities for young people and also to encourage them to participate in the democratic process.

<p>“The youth is the future of the country and Nigeria’s development cannot be achieved without its youth demographics, which make up the majority.</p>
<p>“We want to help them network with one another and take them with us in economic and social development,” she said. “We will have regular meetings with members to define how we work.”</p>
<p>At the Global Youth Sounding Board, Imrana Buba, a Nigerian from Yobe State, was selected as one of 25 young people from around the world to work with the European Commissioner for International Partnerships. It was selected through an open call that led to 4,000 applications from more than 150 countries.</p>

Against this background, Nigeria’s Minister for Youth and Sport Development Sunday Dare recognized the EU as “a supporting partner in youth development; both in terms of authorization and in terms of investments. “
Mr Dare said the federal government has made it very clear that it needs to work with various stakeholders to achieve youth development. So the youth soundboard is a welcome idea, he said, adding that ongoing engagement of young people is the only way to tackle the burning issue of inclusion in development.
“I have faith in the average Nigerian youth and I am sure that the people chosen will be good ambassadors for the nation and its communities,” added Mr. Dare.

<p>“The approach to dealing with youth issues must be diverse and collaborative. What they are doing today adds another level to the efforts of the federal government to engage our young people and empower them. “</p>
<p>The minister also said the federal government has introduced the National Youth Conference, which begins Monday.</p>
<p>The conference will bring 370 Nigerian youth under one roof to discuss four thematic areas, raise critical questions and put together a plan of action for the Nigerian government, he said.</p>
<p>“This has the President’s approval and we will work with the Governors to send 10 good delegates from each state to come together to spend four days. This campaign and process begin effectively today. “</p>
<p>In her remarks, Elizabeth Egharevba, a representative of the National Planning Commission, said the program was a welcome development in Nigeria given the demographics of young people and the need to identify ways to mainstream the youth agenda for justice and sustainable development.</p>
<p>“It is well known that the soundboard for youth in Nigeria is huge and that we as policymakers need to capitalize on this strength. The specific lessons from the Nigerian context are well taken into account when diagnosing problems for the implementation of the Medium Term National Development Plan (MTNDP). “</p>
<p>She said the Department of Finance, Budget and National Planning wanted through the completion of the MTNDP 2021-2025 and the Nigerian Agenda 2050 plan, a strategic blueprint for public administration.</p>
<p>“Through the MTNDP, we aim to increase the participation of young people in governance over existing platforms and the implementation of relevant laws in this regard.</p>
<p>“The Federal Government will therefore leave no stone unturned in giving all interest groups, especially young people, a voice in the implementation of the medium-term plan,” she added.</p>
<p>“I would like to draw the attention of the 25 privileged members of the EU resonance body to see themselves as ambassadors and change agents who are committed to promoting important goals of the Nigerian EU Commission,” said Ms. Egharevba. “Also note that your behavior, your courage, your behavior, your humility and your determination to participate are qualities that can earn you and your country respect and recognition.”</p>
