Doha: Fresh food trade between Qatar and South Africa has increased significantly despite the COVID-19 outbreak, South African Ambassador to Qatar HE Faizel Moosa said during the launch of Carrefour, South Africa, Fresh Meat and Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Week.
“Our vegetable exports from South Africa to Qatar increased by 145 percent between 2019 and 2020. We recorded 237 percent (meat and cattle) for meat products. In general, trade between Qatar and South Africa increased 150 percent between 2019 and 2020.
“Last year was better than 2019, despite the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent global lockdown. However, people have to eat. With the restrictions, the food industry was one of the few critical industries that was open and we have seen a remarkable increase in food exports to Qatar, ”said Ambassador Moosa.
The Week of Carrefour, South Africa, Fresh Meat and Fresh Fruits and Vegetables aims to sustainably promote South African agro-processed products in the Qatari market.
The ambassador said Carrefour imported very little from South Africa, but now it has increased its imports so that South African products can be present in Carrefour stores almost permanently.
The envoy stressed that there are plans to expand the range of products as management believes that South Africa offers inexpensive products, high quality products and affordable prices.
South African products include plums, peaches, pineapples, grapes, oranges, beef, South African biltong, and mutton.
The South African envoy said there are plans to negotiate with Qatar Airways to increase cargo aircraft operations and allow more goods.
“We are now sharing a plane with Kenya, so there is not enough space. We are in discussions with Qatar Airways’ cargo division to see if we can increase flight frequency. We want to increase the range and the amount. We will try to use different products depending on the season, ”he added.
