The Kenyan data center company icolo.io has announced the construction of a new data center in the city of Mombasa.
The new MBA2 data center in Nyali in the north of the city is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2022. The facility will have 1,200 square meters of floor space, 1.6 MW capacity and accommodate more than 600 racks.
“As a leading provider of data center infrastructure, icolo plays an important role in supporting digital transformation strategies by enabling companies to be connected and supported in real time,” said CEO Ranjith Cherickel.
The facility is located in the green field near cable docks in the city.
“This new facility will be the gateway to 200 million people in the region bringing content closer to the end user, reducing latency and improving the Internet experience for everyone. The size of the facility will also be scaled to reflect the tremendous growth in connectivity in East Africa. We hope that all new cables in the region will end up in this new data center, ”added Cherickel.
MBA2 will be the second company in Mombasa and the third in the overall ranking. Mombasa One (MBA1) is a one-story facility with 226 shelves and 450 m² of usable space in the Miritin district. The company’s Nairobi One (NBO1) campus opened in September 2019. The 1 hectare campus is located in the Karen district and has an area of 624 m².
“So far so good and it’s huge! We’re making great strides this morning with our new MBA2 build in Nyali, ”this company tweeted this week.
Icolo.io is part of Digital Realty after Interxion acquired a majority stake in the company in 2019.
