Police arrests two accuse of killing a girl in Kaithal, Haryana

After an overnight search operation, half-burnt body of missing girl was found in an area outside the village. Suspects are being questioned. The accused has been arrested. We found video footage, using which a suspect was detained. During interrogation, he confessed to having raped and killed her. The accused used to live near the victim’s house. Further investigation underway, said SP Maqsood Ahmed.

Maha sees 455 COVID-19 cases, no death; active tally 2,366 as 356 recover

Maharashtra recorded 455 COVID-19 cases, which took the tally to 81,24,754, while the death toll remained unchanged at 1,48,357, a health official said. The recovery count increased by 356 in the last 24 hours to touch 79,74,031, leaving the state with an active caseload of 2,366, he said. State health department data revealed the recovery rate was 98.14 per cent and the fatality rate stood at 1.82 per cent.

No rain in national capital, surrounding areas from tomorrow onwards: IMD

Senior Scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) RK Jenamani said that there would be no rain in the national capital and its surrounding areas from tomorrow onwards. “Highest rainfall was recorded at our station in Mayur Vihar on Saturday. From tomorrow onwards there will be no rain in Delhi-NCR,” said RK Jenamani, Senior Scientist, IMD. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), the national capital recorded heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday (October 8 and 9). The reported rains in Delhi amounted to 74.3mm, 87.2mm and 85.2mm at the SFD, Lodhi Road and Ayaynagar respectively. Also, Delhi ridge and Palam had reported 60 and 64mm respectively.

Delhi to get mobile fire tenders at 50 sites, more fire stations

The Delhi Fire Service has formed an internal committee headed by the Chief Fire Officer to identify 50 mishap-prone spots in the national capital where mobile fire tenders can be deployed. It will also come up with locations where new fire stations could be set up, an official said on Sunday. The development comes days after Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena suggested a slew of measures to improve the national capital’s fire-fighting capability during a meeting with the Delhi Fire Service to review preparedness ahead of Diwali.

DNA mismatch won’t absolve accused: HC

The Karnataka High Court has said that non-matching DNA samples would not absolve a crime accused since it is only collaborative evidence. The court rejected the petition of a 43-year-old bus conductor who is accused of raping and impregnating a 12-year-old relative. He rushed to the High Court, seeking quashing of the case after a DNA test showed that his blood sample and that of the foetus did not match. The accused is a resident of Mysuru. He has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Gujarat Congress MLA and tribal leader Anant Patel was injured after he was allegedly attacked by a local BJP functionary and his supporters in Navsari district, police said on Sunday. The incident took place on Saturday evening and an FIR was registered at Khergam police station in the wee hours of Sunday in which Patel accused local BJP leader Babu Ahir, who is the district panchayat president, and his supporters of attacking him after being upset over a song sung in Patel’s support at a garba event. Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the attack on Patel, who has been leading an agitation against the Centre’s Par-Tapi-Narmada link project in Gujarat, and claimed it was a result of the “anger of the BJP government”.

Drugs, liquor seized from different parts of Kerala

A large quantity of ganja and liquor were seized from different parts of Kerala on Sunday morning by the police in the wake of massive ‘No to Drugs’ campaign launched by the state government recently. A team from Thalayolaparambu police station in Kottayam district arrested two persons early in the morning allegedly with a huge quantity of ganja, an officer of the police station said. As the accused were yet to be presented before the court, exact details of the drug haul and where it was being brought from was not shared by the officer.
