India, Pakistan, South Africa and Australia secure victories

While the initial stages of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 were underway, the Super 12 teams continued their preparations for the tournament before entering the action in the second round. We wrap up the action from Monday’s warm-up games.

Running festival in Dubai while India defeated England

PLAY CENTER

India chased 189 to beat England with an over when the ball was dominated by the bat in Dubai.

Johnny Bairstow (49), Liam Livingstone (30) and Moeen Ali (43 *) increased the pace in England’s first innings. Bairstow was sacked by a fiery Yorker from Jaspit Bumrah just before his half-century, but after a few fireworks from Livingstone, Ali knocked 21 out of the final to lift England to 188/5.

India ignited the power play in response, with a staggering 51 out of 24 balls from KL Rahul making the chase a lightning start. Ishan Kishan got the best score in his role as the opener with 70 (46), and it was Rishabh Pant 29 (14) and Hardik Pandya 16 (10) who ended it in style.

Five English bowlers went over with 10+, while Chis Jordan’s penultimate leaked over 23 runs with the game on the line.

Pakistan confuse the West Indies in Dubai

PLAY CENTER

Pakistan set a marker ahead of the Super 12s with an impressive win over seven wickets against defending T20I World Champions West Indies.

Spinners Imad Wasim and Shadab Khan took just 13 runs out of their five combined overs when the West Indies top order got stuck in Dubai.

A Quickfire 23 of 10 balls from Captain Kieron Pollard helped the Windies to 130/7 but Pakistan made short work of the target and tied it off with seven wickets and 27 balls remaining.

Skipper Babar Azam dropped a composed 50 (41) at the top of the order, but it was Fakhar Zaman who produced the fireworks and popped 46 out of 24 balls, including a maximum, to win the 16th.

South African spin trio contests Afghanistan

PLAY CENTER

The three-pronged twin attack by Tabraiz Shamsi, Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin in South Africa defended a modest goal of 146 runs when the Proteas defeated Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi with 41 runs.

A steady 31 from Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markrams 48 (35) set the platform in the first innings, with David Miller crashing 20 out of 10 on the death to bring the total to 145/5.

Afghanistan’s response got off to an unfortunate start with opening players Mohammad Shahzad and Hazratullah Zazai both eliminated without a goal.

As the required run rate increased, Afghanistan was forced to take risks and the wickets fell too regularly for the hunt to ever pick up speed. Captain Mohammad Nabi scored the top score with an unbeaten 34 in the 104/8 out of his team’s 20 overs, but it was too little too late.

Last drama saves Australia

PLAY CENTER

Australia had Josh Inglis to thank for a three-wicket win over neighbors New Zealand in Abu Dhabi. It took eight out of three deliveries when Inglis hit the kink after Ashton Agar was fired, but he smoked back-to-back fours to seal victory with a delivery that was missing from a dramatic end to the chase.

Previously, Kane Richardson and Adam Zampa were the bowlers’ choice as New Zealand was limited to 158/7 of their 20 overs, with four batter overtaking 30 but none going further, with Kane Williamson scoring the highest score at 37 (30).

Australia’s response stuttered in the middle overs as Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis battled to keep the run rate from spiking. But a belated cameo by Mitchell Starc and Inglis’ exploits made up for it on death.
