Kenya Barris has made an indelible mark on the television world as creator of the hit series Black-ish, which spawned two more shows.Grown-ish “and” Mixed-ish “.
Now the showrunner has decided to try his hand at the world of music by signing a joint venture with a major record label. And he added to his extensive business portfolio by launching a podcast and reportedly signed a deal with ViacomCBS’s new BET Studios after closing a $ 100 million Netflix deal in January.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Barris announced that he founded a record label called Khalabo Music, which is a joint venture with Interscope Records. Khalabo Music has already added a number of artists to its list.
“From the beginning, Khalabo’s goal has been to tell stories that reflect our culture with honesty, specificity, and from a perspective that feels unique to a single voice,” Barris told The Hollywood Reporter.
“Similar to how we approached our television and film content, I hope that Khalabo Music becomes a place where artists are given the space to improve their talent while taking into account the specificity and individuality of their voice and sound.”
“We try to find creative relationships with people who not only move the culture but also see where the culture is going,” said Steve Berman, vice chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records. “Kenya touches people in so many different ways and he wants music to be part of that experience, so the conversation is not just about ‘Let me find this one artist and make the best record,'” Berman continued. “He wants to find the artists and be able to bring music into his universe in many different ways. It’s the big picture with him. “
Barris has hired two industry veterans to run the newest company. Gabe Hilfer, who will serve as director of development and operations for Khalabo Music, and Nicole Plantin, who will serve as general manager.
“Kenya is such an important voice in the culture and I am very excited to combine my passion and experience with its vision,” said Plantin. “I’m looking forward to making music together that is just as phenomenal.”
