With just three days to go until the end of 2021, Kenya will miss the World Health Organization (WHO) target of fully vaccinating at least 40 percent of its population against COVID-19.

By Tuesday, December 28, 14 percent of the approximately 52 million inhabitants of the East African country had completed their vaccination regiments.

Figures released by the Ministry of Health showed that around 9,614,364 vaccines have been administered nationwide. Of these, 5,656,859 were partially vaccinated and 3,957,505 were fully vaccinated.

The Kenyan government wants to vaccinate more people to better protect the population from the disease.

The Ministry of Health last week announced severe restrictions restricting public transport for unvaccinated people.

Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, chief administrative secretary of the health department, announced that proof of vaccination is required in public places such as national parks, game reserves, hotels, bars and restaurants. Public transport operators must also request proof of vaccination from all travelers.

Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe reiterated the guideline in a media briefing on Monday, telling Kenyans, “In order for you to go to public places, please get vaccinated.”

To date, Kenya has recorded 285,654 COVID-19 infections with 5,364 deaths.
