Kenya’s Agnes Tirop and Ethiopia’s Senbere Teferi break world records in Germany

Kenyan Agnes Tirop stormed the finish line and won the 10km Adizero Road to Records event that took place on Sunday. Tirop was first with a time of 30:01. Meanwhile, the Ethiopian Senbere Teferi triumphed in the 5 km race. Teferi finished the race with a time of 2:30 p.m. at the same event in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

Both athletes broke world records when they won their respective 10 km and 5 km track races in Germany.

The Kenyan Agnes Tirop is happy to have broken the world record:

Tirop is two-time world champion over 10 km. She won the 10K race with a time of 30:01, finishing ahead of Sheila Chepkirui.

The Kenyan Agnes Tirop broke the world record of the Moroccan Asmae Leghzaoui 19 years ago, 28 seconds behind.

Chepkirui finished the race with a time of 30:17. She improved the previous record time, but could not keep up with Tirops Excellence. The Kenyan drove past two kilometers ahead and stormed through the finish line.

Nancy Jelagat from Kenya came in third with a time of 30:50.

“I’m so happy to have broken the world record. I had the feeling that the pace was good and Sheila helped me a lot. The track was also very good,” said Tirop.

Tefari is happy about the world record:

Teferi finished the 5K race on Sunday with a time of 2:30 p.m. She improved the previous record of 14:44 minutes set by Kenyan Beatrice Chepkoech.

The Ethiopian Senbere Teferi triumphed in the 5 km race with a time of 14:30 in a race in Herzogenaurach, Germany. Teferi made a stunning comeback just six weeks after finishing sixth at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and won the race.

Meanwhile, Melknat Wudu from Ethiopia, two-time medalist at the U20 World Cup, finished second in 14:54, just ahead of compatriot Nigisti Haftu in the women’s 5 km race.

“I’m so happy,” said Teferi, who finished sixth in the 5000 m Olympic Games in Tokyo. “After the Olympics, I knew I was ready to pursue this world record.”
