“Legendary”: Dale Steyn remembers Sreesanth’s Slog 6 in front of the South African Pacer Andre Nel in the 2006 test

The 2006 test between India and South Africa in Johannesburg is remembered for many reasons. India entered the testing series against a strong Proteas team and was ranked second best player on the tour. The hosts should make the most of the conditions.

But the Indian team, led by Rahul Dravid, wreaked havoc with the ball in the first test of the first innings when South Africa was bundled for 84 in response to the 249 in attendance.

The star of the bowling attack was Pacer S Sreesanth, who picked 5 wickets and gave 40 runs in the innings. But Sreesanth’s most memorable moment in the match was the 2nd inning with the bat.

He hit alongside VRV Singh as the duo tried to extend India’s lead past the 400-run mark. With only one wicket in hand, the pacemakers in South Africa became frustrated, and Andre Nel left Sreesanth a little frustrated.

Nel said a few words to Sreesanth after giving him a scorching delivery. But Sreesanth, who was known not to back away from challenges, stepped up on the next delivery and hurled it straight for the max. Then he waved his bat in the middle of the crease to Nel, who could do nothing but watch.

Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn remembered the moment and described it as “legendary”.

ESPNCricinfo wrote on Twitter: “Name one batter and a recording of it that gives you chills every time.”

In response to the tweet, Steyn wrote: “Sreesanth and his slog from Andre Nel for 6 with the Swinging Bat celebration. Legendary.”
