2. T20I report: David Miller made the difference when he shot an unbeaten 75 for South Africa on Thursday to win the Twenty20 series by beating Ireland with 42 runs.
South Africa slipped to 58-5 after 10 overs, but Miller led the race to catch up with Wiaan Mulder to post 159-7.
Ireland wasted its bowlers’ sterling efforts. The Irish thugs fell to 56-5 after 10 overs but didn’t have a Miller to beat the bowlers. Ireland was completely out for 117 with three balls remaining.
South Africa have an unbeatable 2-0 lead with the third and final T20 on Saturday, also in Belfast.
The proteas actually started badly. Temba Bavuma and Janneman Malan were removed for ducks in the first over by offspinner Paul Stirling.
Miller was dropped behind the wickets by a delivery from Josh Little on the 19th and took advantage of it.
He and Mulder, 36 out of 26 balls, repaired the damage at a score of 58.
Miller went on and made 24 runs of four sixes, three flying over a deep back leg, the last from Little over bowling.
Ireland found themselves in similar trouble as South Africa after 10 overs with 56-5 but couldn’t turn it around. All-rounder Shane Getkate, who was born in South Africa, achieved top marks with 24.
Opener Kevin O’Brien was out for a third straight duck caught and thrown by Bjorn Fortuin. The left arm offspinner earned 3-16 plus a virgin.
Left-wing spinner Tabraiz Shamsi got 3-14 of his four overs and Lungi Ngidi got 1-14.
