Love Island South Africa has come under fire because it started with a predominantly white cast, even though blacks make up most of the country.

The new spin-off series called Love Island SA debuted this weekend with 10 new entrants sharing a villa together looking for love and the chance to win R1 million (£ 47,500).

However, many were unfazed after the cast revealed that the opening cast featured only one black candidate and only two other black men.

In response to the casting, one said on Twitter: “You’re all in South Africa, but you’ve managed to have a whiter cast than Love Island in the UK.”

“This occupation of the love island of South Africa in a country that is 80 percent black,” said one disappointed commentator.

Another argued: “I never want to hear that” they are cast according to their population “. The percentage of blacks in South Africa is 80.2%, and there are only two blacks on the love island of South Africa. It’s a choice. ‘

“How do you want to have a love island in South Africa with ONE black girl?” another asked.

It is not yet known if the next entrants, who usually arrive throughout the series, will be more diverse.

This year’s handful of black candidates is Asad Boomgaard, a 24-year-old Johannesburg personal trainer who describes himself as an old soul and romantic at heart. He likes to be active and is looking for a good wife to keep [him] grounded’.

Durang Atembe, 22, is from Cameroon and is also a personal trainer.

He said, “I have a boast, everyone is saying I should go to the show, I’m doing it and I’m interested. So it will be a blessing to have me on the show. ‘

Thimna Shooto, the only black candidate so far, is 26 years old and comes from Mossel Bay. She thinks the current dating world is very superficial and is looking for a real connection. She says, “I’m sick of these rats and I want a real man.”

The Love Island franchise continues to expand worldwide. Love Island USA recently completed their second season and crowned the first black winning couple.

ITV2 will air the second series of Love Island Australia starting tomorrow night, while Love Island Nigeria was announced last year along with other new territories.
