Making Nigeria a Medical Tourist Destination – Osinbajo
From Johnson Adebowale
TheseR. Over the years, the Nigerian health system has faced challenges such as brain drain and inadequate modern facilities that make it appear ineffective.
However, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was optimistic that with more investment in the sector, the country could also become a preferred destination for medical tourists from developed countries.
Osinbajo expressed this view at the inauguration of Duchess International Hospital, a subsidiary of the Reddington Hospital Group in Lagos.
The vice president, who was accompanied by Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dapo Abiodun of the states of Lagos and Ogun, respectively, to get the health facility up and running, sounded optimistic that it would go along with it serious private sector investment.

Others who joined Osinbajo at the event were the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele; including the managing directors of the Bank of Industry, Olukayode Pitan and Access Bank – Herbert Wigwe, and Dr. Yemi Onabowale, President and CEO of Redington Hospitals.
Osinbajo said the new hospital was a symbol of hope for the country despite the trend.
He said that Nigeria was a country that had world-class talent, ideas and implementation of ideas. He affirmed that with more investment in the health sector, the country will become a preferred destination for medical tourists from developed countries as well.
The Vice President said, “We have everything it takes to be the go-to place for even developed medical tourists who want to skip long lines for specialized home procedures or simply buy more affordable fees for first class healthcare.
“We have by far the largest number of middle- to low-income communities and individuals in sub-Saharan Africa in need of affordable, quality health care.”
Osinbajo agreed with the hospital’s owners on their mission to reverse medical tourism by employing the most advanced technology to provide the fastest, most convenient access to the best medical expertise available worldwide.
“Today is one of those days when you’re particularly proud to be Nigerian. It is one of those days that your belief that this is a country of world-class talent, world-class ideas and world-class implementation is confirmed, ”he said.
He added that if the business was not profitable, the owners would not dare, pointing out that such investments in finding quality medical staff would have a positive impact on doctors.
“We can even reverse the trend of doctors voting with their feet, and we’ve seen several doctors who are part of the management of this facility come from different parts of the world. The reasons for choosing with the feet are all of these – better pay, better equipment.
“But even here, only serious investments by the private sector in high quality health services with top wages for its staff could possibly be an attractive proposition for reversing the trend.
“The only way we can make sure people stay is, of course, by rewarding their services. I think that’s a good start. “
Previously, Reddington Hospital Group Chairman Dr. Adeyemi Onabowale stated that the project was a multidisciplinary facility from a single source, in which the best hospital care would be provided together with first-class hospitality service.
In his remarks, Emefiele said that Apex-Bank will continue to support economic growth as a healthy workforce is critical to building a resilient economy.
