Meet Nzikamira, a Rwandan Music Teacher in Kenya | The new time

TRESOR NZIKAMIRA, a professional musician from Rwanda, decided to bring the skills he acquired at the Nyundo School of Arts and Music to Kenya where he teaches music.

Nzikamira was one of the 30 musicians who won the competition and enrolled in the first PhD at the Nyundo School of Art and Music. There he learned how to play instruments for three years. He also studied music production, singing and other music related studies like music theory, choir to name a few.

“The skills I acquired at the Nyundo School of Art and Music enabled me to become a professional musician. Now I make music for a living. My day-to-day work includes teaching music at various schools in Kenya and running a few personal coaching courses for people who want to learn a thing or two about music,” Tresor told The New Times.

After studying at Nyundo, he managed to perform at various events and stages. As with the 27th edition of the African Union Summit held in Kigali in 2016. He performed with the Symphony Band during Transform Africa 2017. In the same year Tresor also performed at the European Street Fair with Symphony and subsequently appeared at Youth Connekt which featured the renowned American-born Senegalese singer Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam, better known as Akon.

Tresor, who went to Kenya in 2018, teaches at Music in Doors of Hope Christian School. He is also a singer and also produces music at his studio called 2Stones Records in Kenya. Last year he released songs like “Ntayo Watanze” and “Amini Yesu” which were a hit in Kenya.

When asked what inspired him to become a musician, the artist revealed that he got it from his family background: “Most of my relatives were singers in their respective church choirs. In terms of playing musical instruments, I was inspired by my father and two grandfathers, who were good at playing ‘Inanga’. My older brother Boniface Nsabigaba was also a good pianist.”

He told this publication that he has collaborated with several artists such as Masamba Intore and Dieudonne Munyanshoza. He was part of the Shauku Band and the Symphony Band (until then they acted as the band of Nyundo) in 2017 while playing for big artists in Rwanda including; Knowles, Tom Close, Urban Boys, Intore Masamba, Christopher, Jules Santore and Kitoko, to name a few, entertained Rwandans in all 30 districts of the country during the presidential campaign.

“In fact, the way we were taught was more of a vocational skill. The school gave us the complete package with enough knowledge to allow us to teach professionally everything we learned there. They have equipped us with more practical skills and also certified us.”

Tresor Nzikamira was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and grew up in the Ruhango district of Rwanda. He completed his elementary school in his hometown, attended Groupe Scholaire Indagaburezi and finished his Advanced Level from APEKI Tumba, where he studied Computer Science and Management. He later moved to UNILAK/Rwamagana Campus and studied management.
