MTN has the best network in South Africa – by far

MyBroadband Insights’ Q4 2021 Mobile Network Quality Report shows that MTN has by far the best network performance in South Africa.

The report is based on 375,577 speed tests that were performed by MyBroadband Speed ​​Test App users across South Africa between 1 October 2021 and 31 December 2021.

The research shows that South Africa had an average mobile download speed of 47.03Mbps and an average upload speed of 14.48Mbps.

MTN had the highest average download speed at 74.66Mbps, followed by Vodacom (41.55Mbps), Telkom (31.08Mbps), Cell C (18.93Mbps) and Rain (15.39Mbps).

MTN also outperformed its rivals on upload speed. It ranked first with an average upload speed of 24.41Mbps, followed by Vodacom on 11.67Mbps and Rain on 10.05Mbps.

MTN has been dominating the South African network performance rankings for the past few years, thanks to its significant network investment.

MTN South Africa executive for corporate affairs Jacqui O’Sullivan said they consistently upgrade and modernize their network infrastructure.

She added that MTN would continue to innovate and close digital access gaps in South Africa through their network investment of R50 billion over the next five years.

Best mobile network in South Africa

A “Network Quality Score” was calculated for each network using download speed, upload speed, and latency to determine the best mobile network in South Africa.

The Network Quality Score out of 10 shows how a network performs in relation to other networks.

MTN reigned supreme with a Network Quality Score of 9.50, followed by Vodacom on 6.11, Telkom on 5.18, Cell C on 3.67, and Rain on 3.88.
