The U20 World Athletics Championships took place August 17-22 in Nairobi, Kenya, at 5,400 feet above sea level. In this competition, the world’s best between the ages of 16 and 19 meet to compete in the most important athletics events. There were 121 countries in attendance and the competition was hectic.
Osaze DeMund, a member of the National Athletics Team of the Virgin Islands, took part in the 800-meter run in which he ran the race in 1 minute. 58.50 sec. That was far from his personal best of 1: 53.80, and his time did not qualify for the semifinals. DeMund had hoped to run a lot faster but was possibly hampered by his shortness of breath at that altitude.
He is encouraged to continue to work hard to represent the Virgin Islands. The full results can be found at: https://worldathletics.org/competitions
The Athletics Federation of the Virgin Islands (VITFF) also pays tribute to VI national team member Allison Peter. Peter won silver medals in the 100m and 200m with record performances at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Bressanone, Italy. The athletes had to be 16 or 17 years old.
