Silver Ferns starts victorious in the South Africa series

The Silver Ferns started their Quad Series tournament in Cape Town this morning with a 61-41 win over the South Africa Proteas.

After an even first half, the Silver Ferns entered the third quarter as a trio of familiar faces – winger Gina Crampton, and defenders Karin Burger and Jane Watson returned to the black dress.

Midfielder Kate Heffernan, who acted in both wing defense and center to set up four intercepts, and formidable goalscorer Grace Nweke, who had 43 goals from 45 tries, were the only two to have played full games since the silver ferns used all their play 12 in the game.

Proteas midfielder Bongiwe Msomi and marksman Lenize Potgieter put in strong performances for the home side, while Nweke’s perfect 20-of-20 shots and defender Jury’s three intercepts helped the Women in Black go into the main game with a 30-25 lead.

The Silver Ferns limited the Proteas to just five goals in their third season as they took a 50-30 lead in the final round.

The Silver Ferns play the Australian Diamonds in their next game on Monday at 5am NZ time.
