The South African government condemns the coup in Burkina Faso and calls on the military to return to their barracks and restore democracy.
The South African government agrees with the views of the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) that soldiers should return to barracks and use dialogue with the authorities to resolve any issues. There can never be a military solution to problems of this nature, and dialogue and negotiation are the only means to resolve conflicts and arrive at lasting solutions.
The loss of life must be avoided at all costs and all parties involved should commit to dialogue.
The South African government strongly opposes the illegal seizure of power by any group or individual as it reverses democracy and development and delays the realization of Africa’s quest for a better Africa as set out in our Agenda 2063.
