South Africa’s Duane Vermeulen is in doubt for UK and Irish Lions’ first test after sustaining ankle injury | Sports

South Africa suffered a blow last night when their No. 8 World Champion Duane Vermeulen, the man of the game in the 2019 final, hobbled off during the Bulls’ Rainbow Cup clash against the Stormers. Vermeulen is now facing a serious injury problem ahead of the first test next month against the British & Irish Lions in Cape Town.

South Africa head coach Jacques Nienaber will name his 45-man squad for the series today and TV footage after last night’s game at Loftus showed Vermeulen with his left ankle on the ice. Further clarification will follow in the next few days, but initial signs indicated that the injury will be a problem for Nienaber.
