South Africa’s waste problem can be an energy solution

South Africa is running out of landfill space, while battling illegal dumping.

Fifty years ago, the United Nations General Assembly agreed that 5 June would be World Environment Day – to raise awareness of pollution and environmental destruction and promote actions that ensure the sustainability of the planet.

Among the threats to environmental health is waste.

South Africa has a waste problem. Using statistics provided in the National Waste Management Strategy report of 2020, waste management company Interwaste estimates that 122 million tons of waste are generated annually. The majority (90%) of this waste goes to landfills, noted Interwaste marketing director Kate Stubbs.
