The timely fitness boost from South Africa’s captain Bavuma

Temba Bavuma is recovering well from the broken thumb he sustained in Sri Lanka and the South Africa captain can enjoy his first “live net” session this Friday.

Bavuma, who has been sidelined since South Africa’s first ODI against Sri Lanka in September, is hoping to play in the warm-up games leading up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

“My hand is definitely improving day by day,” said Bavuma on Thursday. “It’s getting stronger and I’m much more comfortable with it.

“Tomorrow will be the first time I have a live net against bowlers so I’m looking forward to it and that will give me a better indication of how far I’ve come. At the moment everything is still on the right track. I’m looking for the warm-up games. I feel good.”

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson informs about injuries

Bavuma is a welcome return, but the expected return to the team is giving the South Africans new picking headaches.

In Bavuma’a’s absence, Reeza Hendricks has matched Quinton de Kock at the head of the sequence with Aiden Markram at # 3

Bavuma is likely to return as a prelude, leaving the Proteas with a tough decision on whether to simply move the Hendricks and Markram down a position or expel one of them from the XI.

“My role is clear and clear to me. I’m someone who comes in at the top,” said Bavuma.

“If there is a chance to get into 3rd place, I’ll play here. Reeza has been at the top of the rankings lately.

“But I’ll probably team up with Quinny (De Kock) and see who fits into the middle tier.”

South Africa will play their first warm-up game against Afghanistan on October 18 and begin their T20 World Cup on October 23.
