Umotong: Nigeria’s striker breaks Lewes duck with a brace against London City Lionesses

The 24-year-old scored two goals to open her goal on her return to England despite her side collapsing against the guests

Ini Umotong broke her FA Women’s Championship duck with a brace as Lewes bowed 3-2 to the London City Lionesses on Sunday.

The Nigerian forward joined the Rockettes in January 2021 after splitting up with Swedish Damallsvenskan side Vaxjo despite having 12 months left on her 18-month contract.

The 26-year-old had played two games for her new club without success in front of the goal. However, against her visitors from London, her double efforts broke her duck for Simon Parker’s team.

Lewes returned to victory with a 1-0 win at Coventry United and welcomed the fighting side to The Dripping Pan.

The eventful first half got off to a good start for the hosts when Lucy Ashworth-Clifford’s efforts were rejected but Umotong scored a rebound after just 11 minutes to break the impasse.

About 12 minutes later, the visitors pushed for an equalizer and found a breakthrough through Atlanta Primus to level the score before Kallie Balfour gave them the lead in the 27th minute.

Reading continued to put pressure on the London City defense after the break until they received a penalty and Umotong’s brace converted Umotong in the 80th minute.

London City left it too late to take a win, however, when Ellie Mason hit a corner kick and made no mistake and shot home to secure the win.

Nigeria’s Umotong have survived the Lewes period, scoring twice in three games this season.

With this result, Lewes stayed in sixth place in the table with 18 points from 13 games and hopes to return to winning ways on March 7 against Charlton Athletic.
